The 10 Best Tools for Your Bible Study

Sometimes the idea of studying your Bible can seem daunting, especially if you don’t know what you need. Being a PK (pastor’s kid), I grew up attending countless Bible studies, and I learned quickly that it’s best to have all your tools ready to go. Now that I’m a busy mom, the same rings true today. I’m more apt to grab my Bible and read if I know I have all of my items together in one place. So take a look at my top 10 must-have tools for your Bible study!

What do I need to study my Bible?

You don’t need very much to get started studying your Bible. Remember you can always add more later the more comfortable you become. I like to start with a good study Bible, and my preference is the King James Version since it’s the closest translation we have to the original. Then pens, highlighters, and journals all help so you can keep notes and mark in your Bible.

Bible tabs and bookmarks help with organization, and index cards can be used for scripture memory. I like to have some kind of devotional or spiritual book that I can use to start my Bible study out or to help me choose a topic. Then a bible bag or cover to hold all of this in and a favorite coffee mug are not necessary but good to have all the same.

You can always add more tools the more comfortable you become studying the Bible. I also recommend a Bible dictionary and a concordance to help with unknown words.

Starting a Bible study can seem discouraging, especially when doing it alone. You can always grab a popular Bible study from a local bookstore to help you get started. You can also choose to start in the New Testament reading about Jesus’s life. Jot down anything that stands out or that you have questions about. Reflect on what you read. Then ask your pastor about any questions you may have and record the answers.
