10 Tips for How to Make Bathtime Fun for Babies (and you!)

Bathtime for babies is not just about getting clean—it’s a precious opportunity for bonding, exploration, and fun! Transforming this routine into a delightful experience can help instill a love for water while ensuring your little one is cared for in the best way possible. Here are some engaging activities and care techniques to make every bath a joyful adventure.

Is Bathtime a Struggle with Your Baby?

I get it. Bathtime was such a struggle for me with my babies. And it wasn’t necessarily that they didn’t like the bath. A lot of times I just didn’t know what to do with my babies once they were clean. Looking back I think it was more of my own mental block than my baby being difficult.

Why is Bathtime so hard?

Bathtime with a baby can be quite a challenge for several reasons. You’re trying to find the perfect water temperature for your baby, your baby is squirmy and slippery, and your baby may even hate the bath. I can’t even count the times where I just put my babies in the bath and realized I had left their towel or cloth or even toys in another room. Talk about stressful. My hope is that these 10 tips will help you have a less stressful time bathing your baby and even make it so that you both enjoy it!

10 Tips for How to Make Bathtime Fun for Babies

Tip 1: Creating a Cozy Atmosphere

Start by setting the mood for bath time. Ensure the room is warm, and consider dimming the lights or adding soft, calming music. I like to have a dim lit kitchen as I bathe my baby in the sink, as I feel this helps my baby start to wind down after the day. A comfortable temperature will help your baby feel at ease, making the transition to the bath smoother. You can also use a brightly colored bathmat or a fun deflated bath cushion to make the tub feel inviting.

Tip 2: Incorporating Sensory Play

Babies learn through their senses, so make bathtime a sensory playground! Introduce various textures like soft washcloths, sponges, and rubber bath toys. Fill the tub with just enough water to splash around while remaining safe. You could even add a few drops of baby-safe bath foam or bubbles to create a whimsical atmosphere without overwhelming their senses. Add measuring cups or different sizes of plastic cups and let baby explore pouring water. Sometimes I put my baby’s teething toys in the bath, as well as random toys that float that he can interact with.

Tip 3: Engaging in Splashy Activities

Engage your baby with gentle splashing games. Use cups or containers to pour water gently over their hands, feet, or even their tummy—this encourages them to explore and develop motor skills. Floating toys, like a soft rubber duck, can also captivate their attention and spark curiosity. You could create simple games like “catch the duck,” where you gently float the toy towards them. I love the milestone of babies splashing in the bath, but my goodness does it get messy! Make sure to put a towel down first!

Tip 4: Soothing Care Techniques

When it comes to care, be sure to prioritize safety and comfort. Always use a non-slip mat at the bottom of the tub and keep one hand on your baby at all times. Use gentle, hypoallergenic baby soap and shampoo to clean their delicate skin and hair. Use a hand towel (I’ve used baby shirts before, too) to place over your baby’s belly and chest to keep your baby warm in the bath. Since you aren’t filling up the bathtub or sink, baby can get cold very easily. Use a cup to pour warm water over the cloth.

Tip 5: Bath Time Storytelling

Turn bathtime into an enchanting storytelling session. Use bath-friendly books or simply narrate stories about adventures, animals, or magical creatures. Hold the book within the baby’s line of sight and show baby the pictures. Use grand gestures as you tell stories, and even make up stories that go with baby’s bath toys! I also got washcloth puppets and as I bathed my baby I’d tell stories or sing or talk to him through the puppet. He’d laugh at the silliness of the animal washcloth! All of this not only keeps them entertained but also promotes language development!

Tip 6: Bubble Wonders

Bubbles are an instant hit during bath time! Use gentle, baby-safe bubble bath products to create a fun bubble party in the tub. Watch your baby’s eyes light up as the bubbles form, inviting them to reach out and pop them. You could even create bubble games, such as “catch the bubble” or “bubble surprise,” where you blow bubbles for your baby to try to touch or catch. This fosters hand coordination and provides endless amusement. All of my babies’ favorite things to do with bubbles was to eat them while making “ew” expressions. Great fun!

Tip 7: Minimizing Messes

To keep things tidy—because let’s be honest, baths can get messy—prepare your cleanup area ahead of time. Lay down a large towel or waterproof mat under the bathtub to catch any splashes. Keep essential items like soap, shampoo, washcloths, and towels within arm’s reach to avoid frantic searching while your baby enjoys the water. Rather than filling the entire bathtub, consider using a small baby tub or a laundry basket as a makeshift bathtub that can also help contain the mess! This would also be great for keeping toys close to baby!

Tip 8: Musical Moments

Turn bathtime into a mini concert! Sing nursery rhymes, playful songs, or even dance while gently splashing around in the water. I loved singing the song “Splish Splash I was taking a bath” to my kids, while showing them how to splash the water. I also would sing songs like “5 Little Speckled Frogs” while playing with frog bath toys. And of course I would make up my own songs with familiar tunes about bathtime. Sing or hum anything just to add some more fun to bathtime!

Tip 9: Make it Safe

Most baby baths have a safety sling or hammock for the baby to rest in as a newborn, and then when baby is able to sit up you can take it out. However, if you do not have one of those slings then simply place a hand towel down in the bath. I did this for my babies as the baby tub I had did not have any kind of sling for the baby to lie in. Never leave your baby unattended in the bath. Talk to your baby in soothing tones for comfort and do not put anything in the tub that baby may choke on.

Tip 10: Celebrating the After-Bath Ritual

After the splashes, continue the fun with a cozy dry-off celebration! Wrap your baby in a warm, soft towel and snuggle them close. You can make funny towel-wrapping games or gently blow raspberries on their tummy for giggles. My babies always love tickles right after a bath. Top it off with a lotion rubdown and warm clothes.

Wrap Up

You can see that I’ve used all of these ideas with my babies, from a bath book that was also the song “5 Little Speckled Frogs”, a hand towel for covering my newborn, and cups and measuring spoons for pouring and splashing! My babies love bathtime! And with these fun and nurturing techniques, bathtime can be a favorite bonding experience for you and your baby, building a love for water while ensuring gentle care. Embrace the giggles, splashes, and precious moments that come with each bath, and don’t get too upset if a tidal wave happens.
